This piece explores a concept I call "fluid tempo". In the piano part, the tempo does not fluctuate at all. However, the tempi of the mallet parts are almost constantly changing and are notated by a graph on a second staff. During most of the piece, the tempo fluctuations in the two mallet parts are not coordinated to each other and neither part is coordinated to the piano. On a broad structural level, however, the three parts are constantly weaving in and out of phase. All aspects of the piece are controlled by waveforms at various levels of structural hierarchy.
